Southwest Unveils “Independence One” to Mark America’s 250th Anniversary

Sporting a bold palette of red, white, and deep blue, Southwest Airlines has introduced a striking new commemorative aircraft to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary. The special livery, painted on a brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8, carries the registration N1776R—a nod to 1776, the year the nation declared independence from Great Britain and established its original 13 states.

A Flying Tribute to American History
Dubbed “Independence One,” the aircraft was officially unveiled Monday at Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport.
The design features a prominent “1776” emblazoned across the forward fuselage, just beneath the cockpit windows, while the rear section carries the iconic phrase: “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

The livery blends patriotic symbolism with Southwest’s recognizable branding, creating a visual tribute intended to resonate with both aviation enthusiasts and the traveling public.
Leadership Perspective
Speaking at the unveiling, CEO Bob Jordan described the aircraft as more than just a design statement.
“It’s a symbol of what it means to give America the freedom to fly,” he said. “As Southwest celebrates our 55th year, and as our nation marks 250 years, we wanted to reflect who we are, where we’ve been, and where we are headed.”
Entering Service
Following its debut, “Independence One” is scheduled to operate its first flight to Dallas before entering regular service across Southwest’s domestic network, making it a flying celebration seen by passengers nationwide.
Industry-Wide Celebration
Southwest is not alone in marking the milestone. Major U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Alaska Airlines, are also expected to roll out special liveries in honor of the country’s 250th birthday.

In parallel, Boeing is partnering with the Department of Transportation on a separate initiative, as the “Freedom Plane,” which is touring museums nationwide with reproductions of foundational American documents.
High-Profile Attendance and Security
The unveiling drew a high-profile audience, including airline executives, state transportation officials, and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
Addressing attendees, Duffy emphasized the broader significance of the celebration:
“As we come together for our 250th birthday, we can rally around a shared history and a shared future.”
Security at the event was notably heightened, with a visible presence of law enforcement officers throughout the hangar. The increased precautions followed a recent shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which Duffy had attended days earlier.
