Philippine Airlines Set to Join oneworld Alliance, Expanding Global Connectivity

Philippine Airlines (PR) is set to become the newest member of the oneworld alliance, marking a significant milestone for both the airline and the global airline partnership. The move will make Philippine Airlines the second full Southeast Asian member of oneworld and strengthen the alliance’s presence in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.
The announcement was made during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) 82nd Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, where Philippine Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to begin the process of joining the alliance.

Philippine Airlines was invited to join as a member-designate by the oneworld Governing Board, which consists of the chief executives of the alliance’s member airlines. The alliance currently includes major global carriers such as American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, and several others.
Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines and Chairman of the oneworld Governing Board, welcomed the decision, stating that Philippine Airlines will play a “critical role” in strengthening the alliance’s Southeast Asian Network.
Expanding the oneworld Network
The addition of Philippine Airlines will bring 31 unique destinations to the oneworld Network, significantly enhancing connectivity across the Philippines and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
The airline currently operates nonstop services from its primary hubs in Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB), serving 29 domestic destinations throughout the Philippines and 40 international destinations across Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East.
For travelers, the move creates new opportunities for seamless connections between Southeast Asia and key long-haul markets worldwide.
New Benefits for Frequent Flyers
One of the most noticeable changes for passengers will be the integration of loyalty programs. Once Philippine Airlines formally joins the alliance, members of its Mabuhay Miles frequent flyer program will be able to earn and redeem miles across all oneworld member airlines. Eligible elite members will also gain access to a range of alliance-wide benefits, including priority check-in, priority boarding, additional baggage allowances, and access to more than 700 airport lounges worldwide.
This includes premium oneworld-branded lounges at major international gateways such as Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN).
While Philippine Airlines already maintains codeshare and partnership agreements with several international carriers, full alliance membership will provide a more consistent experience across the entire oneworld Network.

The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Philippine Airlines as the carrier continues to strengthen its international Network and rebuild long-haul competitiveness following the pandemic years.
Joining one of the world's leading airline alliances will increase the airline’s global visibility while providing easier access to international passengers traveling through the Philippines.
For oneworld, the addition fills an important gap in Southeast Asia. While the alliance already benefits from the regional presence of Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific, Philippine Airlines adds extensive domestic coverage throughout the Philippines and strengthens connectivity between Southeast Asia, North America, Australia, the Middle East, and beyond.
