Iberia has officially welcomed the first Airbus A321XLR into its fleet, making it the launch operator for the latest single-aisle aircraft model. Delivered in Hamburg on October 30, 2024, this milestone signals Iberia's continued investment in fuel-efficient, long-haul travel and marks a new era of connectivity and comfort on narrow-body flights.
Equipped with CFM LEAP-1A engines, the A321XLR is designed for efficiency and range. Iberia will introduce the aircraft on its European routes, offering passengers a taste of its enhanced features before its first transatlantic journey from Madrid to Boston in November. The two-class configuration includes lie-flat seats in business class, Airbus's Airspace cabin, larger overhead bins, in-seat connectivity, and advanced lighting—all designed to bring the comfort of a widebody experience to single-aisle aircraft.
The A321XLR's range, which stretches up to 4,700 nautical miles, surpasses that of the A321LR by 15%, allowing for a broader reach while maintaining a 30% reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to older models. This efficiency aligns with Iberia’s strategy to expand its long-haul destinations sustainably.
As demand for the A321XLR grows, with over 500 orders already placed, Airbus is setting ambitious sustainability goals, aiming for all aircraft to be fully compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030. Adding the A321XLR represents an exciting leap forward for Iberia, combining range, efficiency, and comfort as it broadens its global network.
