From Passion to Plane Spotting: The Rise of CaliPlanes’ Aviation Channel

Sal (CaliPlanes)

We had the opportunity to chat with CaliPlanes, a rising star in the plane-spotting community, whose YouTube channel has rapidly gained popularity for its unique focus on California’s airports. As part of the AirNav RadarBox Webcam Program, CaliPlanes is expanding its reach, offering real-time coverage of air traffic in a way that has captivated aviation enthusiasts worldwide.

1. How did Cali Planes begin, and what inspired its creation?

Cali Planes was born in August of 2022, and it all started with just my cellphone. I’ve always been fascinated by aviation and spent a lot of time looking for airport webcams, but I noticed that many of California’s airports weren’t as well covered as others. I wanted to change that and bring these airports to people with the same passion for planes. I started streaming from locations that weren’t typically spotlighted, and the community just grew from there. The goal was simple—give people access to airports they wouldn’t otherwise see, especially those who love aviation but don’t have the chance to travel frequently.

2. Can you tell us about your earliest aviation memories and how your passion for planes developed?

My love for aeroplanes started at a very young age. I still remember my first flight in an AeroMexico MD-80 from Tijuana (TIJ) to Monterrey (MTY) when I was just 12 years old. That day, I flew on an Aviacsa Boeing 737-200 from Monterrey to Guadalajara (GDL). I was in awe, watching these substantial metal machines take to the sky, and I instantly fell in love with aviation. There’s something magical about the physics behind flying; no matter how often I watch planes take off or land, I’m always left speechless.

Even though my passion for aviation has been strong since childhood, life took me down a different career path—I’m a pharmacy technician. But that hasn’t stopped me from immersing myself in the world of aviation through plane spotting and live streaming.

3. How has your experience been since joining the AirNav RadarBox Webcam Program?

Joining the AirNav RadarBox Webcam Program has been a fantastic experience. It’s allowed me to enhance my streams by offering more accurate and real-time flight data, which my viewers love. With RadarBox’s support, I can give the aviation community a more immersive experience by tracking flights and sharing real-time updates. It has elevated what I can offer, and being part of such a reputable program has helped my channel grow in ways I never expected. It’s more than just streaming planes now; it’s about delivering a complete aviation experience.

4. What do you think sets your channel apart from other aviation streamers?

What sets CaliPlanes apart is the focus on California’s lesser-known airports. A lot of significant plane spotting streams tend to cover the significant hubs like Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO), but I wanted to highlight the diversity of airports in the state—like San Diego (SAN) or Long Beach (LGB). These airports have a different kind of charm and provide unique spotting opportunities. I also make it a point to engage with my community, responding to comments and sharing information in real time. It’s not just about the planes; it’s about connecting with people with the same passion.

5. What’s next for CaliPlanes, and what do you envision for the future of your channel?

I’m excited about what the future holds for CaliPlanes. The community around the channel has become like a family to me, and I want to continue building that sense of connection. I plan to expand my coverage to even more airports and provide better quality streams with additional camera setups, all while maintaining that personal touch that makes the channel unique.
