Air Canada Begins Cancelling Flights Ahead of Potential Saturday Strike

Canada’s largest airline is cancelling flights after the union representing its flight attendants issued a 72-hour strike notice. According to Airways Magazine, on Thursday, the union representing more than 10,000 mainline flight attendants at Air Canada and its low-cost subsidiary, Air Canada Rouge, issued a 72-hour strike notice. The notice paves the way for a work stoppage to begin on Saturday, August 1,6 at 00:58 EDT.
Preemptive Cancellations Underway
To mitigate the impact of a possible strike and ensure aircraft and crews are positioned back at their respective bases, Air Canada has already begun preemptively cancelling flights. These cancellations affect both domestic and international operations, although the extent varies from day to day.
Domestic Operations
Between August 8 and August 16, Air Canada scheduled 3,179 domestic flights, of which 79 were cancelled.
International Operations
During the same nine-day period, Air Canada scheduled 3,284 international flights, cancelling 29 in total.
