Icelandair Welcomes its First Airbus A321LR

On December 3rd, 2024, Icelandair reached a significant milestone in its history by delivering its first Airbus A321LR in Hamburg, Germany. This marks the airline’s official entry into the Airbus family and a significant step forward in its fleet renewal journey.

The A321LR is the first of four aircraft leased from SMBC Aviation Capital Limited and has a two-class configuration: 22 Business Class seats and 165 Economy seats. The aircraft features Airbus’s cutting-edge Airspace cabin, designed with passenger comfort in mind. It offers more spacious overhead bins, next-generation inflight entertainment, advanced connectivity, and mood lighting to enhance the onboard experience.

Built for Icelandair’s Transatlantic Network

With a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles, the A321LR perfectly suits Icelandair’s transatlantic routes. Beyond its impressive reach, the aircraft is 20% more fuel-efficient than older models and significantly reduces CO₂ emissions, supporting the airline’s environmental goals.

In line with Icelandair’s commitment to sustainability, the A321LR is ready to operate on up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) today. It is expected to handle 100% SAF by 2030—an essential milestone as the aviation industry continues to push for greener skies.

Paving the Way for the Future

This delivery is just the beginning. Icelandair plans to expand its Airbus fleet further with 13 A321XLRs, an even longer-range version of the A321neo family. These aircraft will be more efficient, allowing the airline to optimize its transatlantic operations and expand its route network.

The addition of the A321LR also reflects the growing popularity of the A321neo family, with more than 6,700 orders placed globally. Icelandair’s decision to introduce this aircraft is a testament to its proven reliability, performance, and ability to deliver a premium passenger experience.
